Psychology training in Australian Higher Education: Flux and future states

Heads of Psychology Australia (HPA, formerly HODSPA) initiated a Psychology Workforce Steering Committee at the September 2024 HODSPA general meeting in response to the changing nature of the psychology workforce and its impact on training and education. A key task of this committee was to consult with key stakeholders, including students, employers, consumers, universities, educational providers, and Indigenous and diverse cohorts in relation to training and workforce needs. 

The PsyBA announcement on March 31st, 2025, signalling the review of psychology training pathways in Australia was unexpected. The review provided an opportunity for HPA to work alongside PsyBA in gathering early feedback from stakeholders about the implications of the review for psychology training and education.

While the PsyBA Review is current and implementation may be some years away, the HPA Psychology Workforce Steering Committee has recognised the importance of an inclusive and iterative approach to consultation across different stakeholder groups to inform potential training and education options in response to changing workforce requirements. In this presentation the processes and future plans undertaken by HPA throughout this consultation will be outlined, and questions posed regarding future considerations for psychology training in Australia.
